When should you start shopping for your prom dress?
Most UK proms are held between June and July, at the end of the school year and the end of exams for Year 11 students. Some sixth form schools and colleges hold a Leaver’s Ball at the end of the school year as well, and a few might hold an event in October.
Most prom girls start to do their online research during the summer holidays before starting the new school year. Although you might think this leaves plenty of time to start looking, we find that a lot of people are actually ordering dresses in September and October, especially in the October half term. From a parent’s point of view, this allows (at Lily’s Boutique) the opportunity to spread the cost over several months (we offer interest-free plans on all prom dresses).
A one-of-a-kind prom dress
We can’t guarantee that your dress is the only one of its kind, but we do make sure that you have full style exclusivity in your school as far as we can. That means we won’t sell the same dress twice to the same school, which is another reason many girls choose to shop early. That way, you’ll have a much larger selection of styles to choose from.
And the sooner you pick your design, the more time we have to cater to bespoke options or design changes, including unique colour choices. We can even offer an in-house design option for a completely unique look.
Plenty of choice for everyone
At Lily’s Boutique we understand that your dress can be an important decision, and so we want to offer you as much choice as possible. With over 3500 dresses in stock, you’d think we have plenty for everyone. But just to be sure, we have even more options to offer by ordering in.
All our newest collections are available to order, which means that we can offer a huge selection of styles and colour in every size, from 000 to 30. On top of that, we also offer off-the-peg designer exclusives, all of which means we’re certain we can find the perfect dress to suit you.
Leave plenty of time for alterations
Once you’ve found the ideal style, we will need to allow time to order it and, ideally, for any alterations required.
That’s not to say that you should be worrying if you haven’t already started shopping. We continue to sell prom dresses right up to the event, but your choice will be limited to the dresses we have in stock. And we can usually fit in last-minute alterations in-house. But, to remove some of the stress, we do recommend starting early if you can.
Shopping early on also offers you flexibility in your payment options. We offer interest-free payments right up to the event. Alternatively, we can take a deposit when you order your dress, with the balance to be paid when your dress has arrived with us.
A personal stylist to choose your ideal fit
We don’t expect you to try on all 3500 dresses in stock. And we appreciate that it can be quite overwhelming to begin with. That’s why we try to make your shopping experience as unique and personal as we can.
Make an appointment with one of our stylists and we can give you a specific time to make sure you have a changing room and space to try on as many dresses as you want. We’ll also help you understand the difference in styles, from ballgown to slinky, beaded to fishtail.
It’s best to try on some of each style to begin with, to see what you feel most comfortable in and to find out which best suits your personality, body type, and style preferences. Plus, it’s a great way to see how different colours suit your hair and skin tone. Although fashion does change, what looks great on different people tends to stay the same, so we’re confident we’ll have something that you look and feel great in.
Appointments and private rooms`
While we do recommend making an appointment, we can accommodate walk-ins most of the time. If you’re particularly nervous or need a quiet shopping experience, just let us know when you book. We’ll accommodate you with an evening appointment or private room where we can.

Our aim is to help you feel as comfortable as possible while you shop, and on the evening of the event. If you’re comfortable you’ll look and feel happy – and that’s what it’s all about, after all. It should be an enjoyable event that you remember for the right reasons.
