Dress Alterations - Which Changes Can Be Made to Your Wedding Dress?

Updated: Nov 29, 2021

At Lily’s Boutique, we understand that no two brides are the same.

Our aim is to provide you with a dress that makes you feel as confident and comfortable as possible on your special day. We have the vision and expertise to make your chosen dress fit beautifully with your body shape and create that ‘made for you’ look.

No single dress is going to fit two people the same, which is why we take the time to discuss and demonstrate your options before your chosen dress undergoes bespoke customisation and/or alterations.

In House Alteration Service

One of the many things that set Lily’s Boutique apart from many other bridal shops is that we have our own in-house professional alterations team.

With many years in the bridal and fashion industry, our team have a wealth of great experience at the sharp end of fashion and have worked on garments for celebrities including Premier League footballer’s brides-to-be and other sporting stars. Our eye for detail is guaranteed to give you total confidence that you will get the right fit on your special day.

Alterations can be stressful, especially if you’re thinking of taking your dress to a high-street seamstress. It’s difficult to find somebody that you trust with your precious dress, and waiting lists are usually considerably long. Our in-house alteration team calculates the cost of your required alterations beforehand to ensure that you know what the cost will be before you book. You can also rest assured that you’re getting good value for money, the highest quality materials, and a fantastic result all within your budget.

What Types of Alterations Can Be Made?

Almost everybody feels they need a little nip and tuck, and often brides are unaware of just how much we can add or take away when it comes to alterations. We’ve included a list of popular dress alterations that we offer at Lily’s Boutique to give you an idea of the magic we can create.

Hemming

Shortening the hem on a wedding dress is a very common and simple alteration. If you’re worried about tripping whilst walking down the aisle or have a beautiful pair of shoes that you would like to show off, then making the front of your dress slightly shorter can make you feel more comfortable and steadier on your feet.

Adjusting The Bust

Whether you have large or small boobs, adding a little lift can do wonders to the overall shape, fullness, and size of your cleavage. Nobody really wants to be wearing a bra on their wedding day, so adding or taking away any padding and removing gaping material will help you feel secure whilst making your boobs look fabulous and keeping them secure!

Adjusting The Back

Getting the back of your dress fitting nicely is just as important to us as the front. If your chosen dress is fitted at the top, then opting for a bigger size and taking away any un-needed fabric will help avoid any digging in around the back or underarms, two areas many women often feel conscious about.

Adjusting The Hips and Waist

Sinching in the waist of a dress can flatter and smooth those blessed with curves or create the illusion of an hourglass figure for those with petite frames. A dress with little to no shape is going to make you appear swamped, whereas a sinched in hip and waist area will emphasise your body shape.

Shortening Straps

Nobody wants to be pulling shoulder straps up off their shoulders all day.

If your dress has straps, these can be shortened to ensure that they stay in place all day without digging in.

Adding sleeves or solving the “I love this dress but...

Sometimes you just love a wedding gown, but there’s something niggling you…

Perhaps you’d like sleeves - maybe a drop sleeve or something longer. Perhaps you’d like a little more embellishment or “bling” (maybe just a few sparkly buttons down the back). Maybe you love the dress, but you’d like it in a different colour. Whilst we don’t say we can do absolutely anything, we’ll certainly try our very best! Ask us – you’ll be surprised what we can achieve, working with you to achieve the perfect look!

We hope that this guide has given you an insight into the popular alterations our talented team can provide at Lily’s Boutique. As part of our full service, each of our dresses is professionally steamed before collection and all brides receive advice on storage, cleaning, and packing your wedding dress.
